SCR is independent!

While independent from any other organization, SCR is a member of several organizations.

We have, in the past, worked locally with organizations including the Westcott Community Center, the Syracuse Cooperative Federal Credit Union, and teachers in the Syracuse City School District.

We obtain programming from several sources including other radio stations, independent producers, and the Pacifica Network.

SCR is a Pacifica Affiliate Station

Pacifica is a radio network that brings listeners alternative, free speech, listener sponsored radio. The network, more than 50 years old, consists of five sister stations (all in major U.S. cities) and 84 affiliate stations across the United States, of which Syracuse Community Radio is proud to be one!

SCR is part of the Grassroots Radio Coalition

Syracuse Community Radio participates in the Grassroots Radio Coalition, a loose, non-hierarchical coalition of community media activists. The GRC was born in 1996 as a reaction against increasing commercialization of public radio and lack of support for volunteer-based stations.

We find resonance with the GRC mission statement:

More than audio outlets, volunteer-based community radio stations are cultural institutions in their communities, reflecting the unique concerns and passions of the people who live there. With a system of governance based on openness and collaboration, and diverse programming produced by volunteers and funded by listeners, these stations are cornerstones of participatory democracy, offering ordinary citizens the chance to exercise First Amendment rights in a mass medium and audiences the opportunity to directly support the programming that is of importance to them.

SCR is a member of AMARC

Syracuse Community Radio is a member of AMARC, the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters.

SCR is a member of the NFCB

We rely on our membership in the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB). We are committed to the NFCB's core values of localism, diversity, and public service.

The NFCB, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2005, advocates for national public policy, funding, recognition, and resources on our behalf.

They also provide services that support and sustain our work. They host the annual Community Radio Conference, which has been a great informational and networking resource for station staff.
